Krav Maga

Krav Maga FAQs

What is Krav Maga?

Krav Maga is a form of self-defense developed by the Israeli military. It has since been made available to civilians (like us). The guiding principle behind Krav Maga is to defend oneself through aggressive and rapid use of force to the most vulnerable parts of our attacker(s). It is no-nonsense. It can be used against a single attacker, a knife, a gun, multiple attackers, and essentially any other self-defense situation. With dedication, it also does not take long to become proficient – namely about 6 months.

What Krav Maga is NOT

Krav Maga is not a martial art! It borrows from many styles of martial arts from Kickboxing to Brazilian Jui Jitsu, but at the end of the day, Krav Maga is meant to be used as a self-defense tool. This means we NEVER fight fair. Eye striking, hair pulling, and groin striking are all fair game and encouraged.

What does Krav Maga mean?

The literal translation from Hebrew to English is “contact combat” or “close combat.”

What should I expect from attending class?

You do not have to be an Olympic athlete to complete a beginner Krav Maga class with us. Each class consists of warm-ups, skill learning, practice, and stress drills. While these can be challenging, we encourage all attendees to go at their own pace when starting out. Not to mention we have more than friendly instructors who would be happy to give you assists/recommendations should you have injuries or questions!

What if I have no martial arts experience?

You don’t need any martial arts experience to start training in Krav Maga.

Will I have to wear a karate uniform?

Not at all! We only require that attendees wear well fitted athletic clothes and tennis shoes / close-toed shoes for our classes.

Is Krav Maga only for men?

No! We encourage both men and women to take our Krav Maga classes, and there is a good split of both sexes in most classes.

Is there a belt system for Krav Maga?

Yes, Krav Maga has a complete belt system:

KM Level 1 (Yellow Belt)
KM Level 2 (Orange Belt)
KM Level 3 (Green Belt)
KM Level 4 (Blue Belt)
KM Level 5 (Brown and Black Belt)
